“Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, take pleasure in Him]; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit [your graciousness, unselfishness, mercy, tolerance, and patience] be known to all people. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].
Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]. The things which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things [in daily life], and the God [who is the source] of peace and well-being will be with you.
“I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]” (Philippians 4:4-9 & 13 AMP)
When a friend passed these verses along to me after using them as encouragement to someone else I had a sense that God was sending them to me too. As a person going through struggles in my own life I’ve become more attuned to God sending encouragement my way and more sensitive to look for any glimmer of His face.
I think that these verses are a good reminder that we are supposed to (even in our darkest times) give the Sovereign God who created us and who gave us a way of Salvation through His own Son, Christ Jesus thanks and praise for all that He has done, all that He is doing, and all that He will do in our lives. When we offer up our thanks and praises to Him and try to live like He calls us to live even in the midst of our suffering and turmoil He brings those of us who are born again believers of Christ peace and comfort beyond all understanding.
If you ever speak to me you’ll find out that I have no doubt in my salvation and in God Himself. Even still, I struggle with this at times too, wondering if God forgot me and passed over me with His peace and blessings. It is when we read these verses through believer’s eyes and let the Holy Spirit speak to us that we see that He is inviting us to come to Him for this peace much like a child who has gotten hurt runs to their parent for comfort. Only, this parent is the Author of all creation and with Him all things are possible.
Do you need peace and comfort today? Run to God and let Him wrap His loving arms around you and you can experience His unconditional love.
Sovereign God… Daddy, we come to You today as a child runs to a parent with a wound. We need Your comfort and peace, we need Your healing touch and Your unending love. Please open our hearts and shine Your glorious face upon us. Wrap Your loving arms around us and scoop us up as little children who are wounded, heartbroken, and in deep need of a parent’s love. Hold us and care for us and draw us ever nearer to Yourself. We love You and we thank You and we praise You. God You are everything, without You our hearts wouldn’t beat and we would have nothing to breathe. You created us to love You and to have a relationship with You. We are totally dependent on You and need Your love. Draw us to Yourself and show us Your love and Your glorious face today. It’s in the precious name of Christ Jesus we pray. AMEN!
