The All Consuming Fire

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29

“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” Deuteronomy 4:24

We read in scripture that God is an all consuming fire. Both in deserving and desiring our worship and in the punishment of evil. I would like to borrow this as an analogy for the way that I feel about Him at the moment.

If you have been reading these devotions you may have understood that my inspiration for writing them has come from some painful situations in my life and from the divine inspiration that I have received while trying to seek God in the midst of that pain. It seems that the more I try to draw near to God the greater the fire burns inside of me to draw even closer. The more I have of His Holy Spirit the more He fans those flames that burn within me.

In a day when people are “consumed” by many things should we not desire to be consumed by the passion of the consuming fire of the love of God?

I would like to issue a challenge to you all. Surrender every part of yourself to God and ask Him to fan the flames of passion of your love for Him. Drink deeply from His word, devotions, podcasts, and seek Him in prayer and times of quiet listening. Ask Him for more of Himself in your life. I know that in my own life that He has rekindled and fanned the flame of that passion and I pray that He will for you as well.

Sovereign God, open our hearts and help us to see You. Fan the flame that burns within us for You. Show us Yourself and Your love. Draw us to You and fill us with Your Spirit. Consume us with a passion for You and to tell others about Jesus. We love You God and we need You. In Jesus name. AMEN!
